Questions Every Couple Should Answer Before the Wedding

A wedding marks the start of a marriage, but the conversations that shape it happen beforehand. You don’t need identical answers to every question. You do need to understand each other’s expectations—and know how you’ll handle differences.

Values and Everyday Life

  • What does a good marriage look and feel like to each of us?
  • How much time do we want together, and how much time apart?
  • What does respect look like during a disagreement?
  • Which traditions, beliefs, or values do we want to keep—or create?

Money and Work

  • What debts, savings, or financial obligations should we know about?
  • Will we combine finances, keep them separate, or use both approaches?
  • How will we make major spending decisions?
  • How might work, career changes, or relocation affect our plans?

Family and Children

  • Do we want children? If so, when, and what if having them is difficult?
  • What are our expectations around parenting and sharing caregiving?
  • How involved will extended family be in our decisions and daily life?
  • What boundaries do we want with relatives and friends?

Conflict, Intimacy, and Change

  • What helps each of us feel heard when we’re upset?
  • How will we repair things after an argument?
  • What do affection, sex, privacy, and fidelity mean to each of us?
  • How will we handle periods of stress, illness, or changing needs?

Try discussing these questions over several conversations rather than treating them like an interview. Listen for what matters beneath each answer, and make space for uncertainty. The aim isn’t to eliminate every surprise—it’s to begin marriage knowing how to face the important ones together.
