Boundaries Are Not Rejection

A boundary is a way to communicate what you need to feel respected and well—not a way to punish or push someone away. In a healthy relationship, boundaries help both people stay connected without giving up their individuality.

A boundary might sound like:

  • “I need some quiet time after work. Let’s catch up after dinner.”
  • “I’m not comfortable discussing this while we’re yelling. I’ll take a break, and we can try again in half an hour.”
  • “I care about you, but I can’t be available by phone during work.”

How to Set One With Care

Be clear about what you need, speak from your own perspective, and—when possible—say when you’ll reconnect. A boundary describes what you will do to care for yourself; it isn’t a demand that your partner change.

And if your partner sets a boundary, try not to treat it as proof they love you less. You can feel disappointed and still respect their limit.

Boundaries don’t guarantee agreement. They create clarity about how each person can participate in the relationship with honesty and care.
